Andy Hardy Gets Spring Fever

(B&W, 1939, 86 minutes)

Springtime in the small town of Carvel brings new dilemmas to both Andy (Mickey Rooney) and his father, Judge James Hardy (Lewis Stone). Discovery of aluminum [bauxite] on previously worthless land convinces the honest judge to enter into a partnership with the anxious promoters. With young Andy, the problem is one of the heart: girlfriend Polly (Ann Rutherford) has a crush on a new fella!

While Judge Hardy is busy raising money, Andy is busy falling head over heels for the substitute drama teacher. Desperate to please her, the lovestruck teen becomes the perfect student - even to the extent of writing, producing and starring in the school's annual play, "Adrift in Tahiti." Yes, everything appears to be "swell" for both of the Hardy menfolk, until...

But, as with all installments in this ageless, audience-pleasing film series, the final fade-out finds everyone's problems satisfyingly solved, and the Hardy family once again as proud as can be of their talented, irrepressible, All-American boy.1
