Andy Hardy's Dilemma
A Lesson in Mathematics - And Other Things
(B&W, 1938, 18 minutes)
This is not a regular Andy Hardy episode, but a short subject promoting the Community Chest.
Andy tries to talk his dad
(Judge Hardy) into buying him a car for 200 bucks. Judge Hardy just happens to have $200 that he was about to donate to
charity. So he tells Andy he will use the money to buy him a new car if Andy thinks that is a better deal than the
charity donation.
So Andy finds a car for $200 and they take it for a spin. Judge Hardy has him stop in at a day nursery and have a look
around. After seeing the place and listening to what the people are doing there, Andy decides that is definitely worth
a $50 donation.
So, back to the car lot and Andy finds a car for $150. as they are test-driving this car, they stop in at a community
house...
And so it goes. They also visit an orthopaedic hospital and a Salvation Army home for women. After stopping at
each organization, Andy agrees that the Judge's money is better spent supporting these charities, so they return to the
car lot to test drive a cheaper car. Judge Hardy donates $50.00 at each charity organization until there is no money
left for a car.
Finally Judge Hardy gives Andy $10 to fix his existing car. But Andy finds a better use even for that!
Many Americans who watch Judge Hardy today may find his values quaint and obsolete. Too bad for America.
